The Mathematical Kari is someone who likes to work with others and talk through the math. Mathematical Kari pays attention to details to make sure she doesn't make silly mistakes. I also enjoy helping others and love when students have that "aha! moment" and fully understand the concepts. I try to take every angle into consideration and make sure I am thinking about all options when figuring out saving, investment, money issues. Mathematical Kari is one side of me, there is also the Capoeira Kari, Teacher Kari, Friend Kari, etc. Who is the Mathematical You?!

Describe your relationship to mathematics.

KayNaz said...
Mathematics and I are cool peoples. I don't like it much, but it likes me. No matter how much older I get or what school I end up in, it just seems to follow me around >:( I appreciate it though.. I guess. Math and I have become deeper throughout the last few years especially now that I am taking AP Calculus. I guess I like it more but I am still frustrated at times.

Mathematics and I have always had a great relationship. As a child I used to do math problems for fun, yes I've always been a nerd. I enjoy talking about mathematics with others, I don't like doing math by myself. I struggled with math in college but with the help of a study group I was more successful. I love teaching math because mathematics is often a gatekeeper to higher education. I love helping my students be proud of themselves and gain confidence in their ability as mathematicians. I look forward to reading student comments and input about mathematics teaching and learning.

math is very interesting. As a child in Ghana I was intimatiated by math. I struggled with math especially in first grade so each time i got home form school my mom would teach me the times table or make me solve problems. My biggest challenge was division. We did not like each other. I always questioned why was math so important. when I moved to New York at the age of ten I started seeing the siginfience and that math is some how our unviresal language.

To be honest math and I never connected. Although I understood concepts and the basis of math through my years in school, it was never my strongest subject. At times I do enjoy the challenges I face with math problems as I am a person that takes challenges head on. ..BUT after highschool i dont want to know anything else about math

I have struggled mightily with mathematics my whole academic carer and I cannot wait to graduate high school and not have to deal with it anymore in college. I am just not very good with numbers and the whole subject matter is very confusing for me. I have developed a strong distaste as well as a deep misunderstanding on arithmetic. Math has plagued my grades and ruined my average since I can remember.

What do you think about Performance Based Assessment? www.performanceassessment.org

Kim R said...
As a senior I am still not use presenting, my nerves still get the best of me but this experience will surly help me through my years in college as well as the preparation. This is definitely a difficult task but in the progress, this alone will help you with organization as well as your habits of mind.

(whoa)PBA's are great, I mean I hate preparing for them but honestly they are good for when we get to college or even our caree jobs some people will have to present during a meeting, and since we been doing pba's since 9th grade we are going to ACE them presentations.

January 14, 2010 10:16 AM

Denisse Lourido said...
i think PBA's are ok, atleast we dont have to take a million regents like all other schools do. i hate preparing for them but it is good to prepare you for college because im college sometimes you have to make a speech .

ahh i hate talking infront of a group of people ! lol, i hate the spotlight when having to teach others, but i know its good practice for college presentations which i think its great. i must say preparing for them is the worst! which i must say its very STRESSFUL!. but after you done and you get that passing grade i must say you very proud of yourself in the end =]

It is a good way to gauge how much a student learned from the lesson and to also help prepare presenting in front of a committee.

PBA's ...I feel this is way better than taking so many regents and midterms. I prefer presenting my pba's over taking regents because it gives me a chance to really explain things, I may get the answer wrong but I'll still be able to show my understanding of the math I've learned.

January 14, 2010 10:30 AM

in one way pba are great because you present what chu learn the whole semester and the other way is bad because it make you work hard

I strongly feel that PBA's are connected with the things you'd have to do in the real world, like public speaking and oratory, preparing and researching facts and revisiting the past to understand the present a lot better.

O M G, it was a little horrid. Especially since I didn't have a voice and it was hard to explain long calculations and how to do problems and also find the answers. SO it was stressful, the actually doing of the problem was fun though!

PBA's are really stressful but once you get used to them its not so bad. You need to be able to know how to use your time wisely and be as organized as possible. Although I am a senior, I still get very nervous and anxious before I present. I think its a good experience though and they prepare you for college.

Its a great way to substitute the regents exams because it prepares us better for later on in life and we can get a lot of help from the teachers in our preparations.

PBAs can be really stressful. in order to be successful, you HAVE to meet all deadlines. if you miss one, it can become really stressful and overwhelming but the most important thing we need in the PBA process is being able to manage our time correctly and be ORGANIZED!... i like PBAs for the simply fact that it's my only opportunity to prove to not only myself but to others, all that i have learned in only one semester..

January 15, 2010 8:53 AM

PBA's is better then having to take all the regents. Even though i hate being on the spotlight having to talk in front of people i feel that its way better and it easier :)

i think pba is a good way to how our underdtanding , rather then sitting down and doing a 3 hour test .also its very stresssful but once your done and pass it feels great

I think that pba's are a very necessary towards the learning way in vanguard, showing your progressive knowledge that you have been learning.

i actually think that PBA is a great way to show how u have grown as a person instead if taking a test that proves your intelligence. i can very overwhelming when you have a question on the test that you have never studied before but you can never go wrong on what you did in the class room and you can show how u built up all this work after so many years and how it maybe connected.

I'm totally not a test taker so I have to say that I love PBA's. The process of preparing for them is annoying but once it's over with it's a big relief. I love that we have this option because we get comforable with public speaking, and the subject in general.

I learn math best when...

Who/what inspires you?

I like learning math when...

What goals do you have for yourself and how do you plan to achieve them?

Why is mathematics important?

What advice do you have for math students to be successful?

Have you struggled in math? How did you overcome it to be successful?

What are you most proud of?
